Opening Reception: Saturday, March 31, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Shifting Pulse, an exhibition of atmospheric, large-scale works on paper by Santa Fe-based artist Jane Lackey. This will be the artist’s first solo show in Albuquerque and the first time the gallery has exhibited her work.
Lackey is known for sculpture, installations, and drawings that evolve from a core interest in textiles and summon invisible aspects of identity and human connection. Whether sensual, biological, or spatial, her works trace ephemeral aspects of information and communication. Mapped schema on paper expand to immersive installations aligning “place” with self-reflection, scrutiny, comparison, movement, and conceptual resonance.
For Shifting Pulse, Lackey creates intricate works by employing a subjective mark-making system based on repetitive motion. By adding and subtracting materials such as adhesive labels, paint, or thread to the surface of translucent paper, she creates a range of interconnected yet minimal fields resulting in a series of on/off visual pulses. Perceptual systems, math, textile structure, and the mesh of communication are unseen subjects that influence her abstract spatial drawings. The surfaces never quite settle down; they are in flux, eliciting linear intersections that shift in formation as they balance physical energy and stillness.
